"Death is our greatest opportunity" for enlightenment, claims Nairn, a student of Jungian psychology and international teacher of Buddhism. Drawing parallels between the "unseen psychological forces" operating in the human mind and the teachings in the Tibetan Book of the Dead, Nairn outlines six distinct consciousness-states, called bardos, that humans encounter—three in life and three in death. By appropriately training one's mind in the life bardos—gaining skill in lucid dreaming and mindfulness, for example—one can "die skillfully" and (after dying) recognize and exploit the unique opportunities the death bardos offer for enlightenment. Having laid this foundation, Nairn then addresses such topics as overcoming fear and habitual tendencies, cultivating compassion, helping the dying and assisting the dead—by, for example, reading to the corpse to encourage the person (now in the death bardos) to "merge with the bright light." Nairn often blends disciplines, as when he sets traditional Buddhist teachings on attachment within the psychological concept of projection. At times Nairn's discussions, particularly his descriptions of the death bardos, are vivid and engaging, but at other times he writes in terms so broad that his meaning is obscured rather than elucidated. Good book but there are so many possibilities now in the area of Buddhist death awareness studies.I suggest looking into the books written by Tibetan Masters which, however, are not automatically goodjust because of who wrote them. Ideally, reading should inspire Practice...

This book inspired my practice of Tibetan Buddhism. Mr. Nairn makes personal issues universal, and points out remedies for our suffering. He makes his reader want to try these techniques for the reader's own benefit while making it clear how we all benefit from them. This is a truly excellent introduction to Vajrayana Buddhism. Buy two, because you'll want to give one to a friend. I did!

Mr Nairn is a wonderful teacher. This book provides a very clear road map to guide one through the thinking of Buddhists in reference to our life, our dreams and what awaits us in death. I appreciated the very grounded explanations of the Tibetan Book of the Dead and the exercises to help one with the work of recognizing our own emotional blockages.

I bought this book 8 years ago (for me). I just recently began reading it and it is very helpful in understanding our life process. I find the book very easy to read and some explicit instructions of things we can do to help live happy today (without resentments, etc.) AND to have a peaceful transition. I bought this book awhile back to lend to my friends, so I could keep my own copy!

Wonderful way to combine Western psychology with Eastern precepts.

The book is a western interpretation of the Tibetan Book of the Dead. The book enlightens our mental presence which admits compassion into our lives, as we practice being here now.

This is a wonderful book, Living, Dreaming, Dying: Wisdom for Everyday Life from the Tibetan Book of the Dead by Rob Nairn. I read it a few years ago and gave the book to my sister who has read it over and over again and loves it. Each time, she finds more wisdom. I am purchasing the book for a second time to read it again.

I am a Pilot and have been flying for many years. I have always had an Iteration of of Microsoft Flight Simulator on my Computer. This one is the best of all. The Graphic renderings are flawless and flying is smooth and accurate. Very well pleased with this piece of Software.UpDate: After months of use I can truly say this is the best Flight Sim Microsoft has ever produced and works perfectly on a Windows 10 64 bit system.

As I write this review, I think back to when I was a kid who had a passion for aviation in the early/mid 90's, and taking off in the Learjet from old Meigs Field along the Chicago waterfront. It was nothing fancy, and there were no yokes and rudder pedals connected to the computer...just the arrows on the keyboard, F4 for full throttle, etc. And what felt like 5fps if you were lucky (rolling eyes). But in 2002, when I started pursuing my PPL, I was able to take basic concepts from even those times of clicking the arrows, and applied it to real flying. At 10.5 hours, my instructor signed me off for solo flight, since I had been able to pick things up so quickly, and I definitely give some credit to the flight simulator growing up.As I skip ahead to the present day, I think about what it would've been like to have this book growing up. It's basically like having a certified flight instructor sitting next to you at all times, whose brain you can pick whenever you have a question. I bought this book about 4 years ago since I hadn't flown in real life for awhile, so I could refresh my memory on things that I knew I had started to forget, but also I bought it just to have. I never imagined the amount of information it'd have in it. The book begins with the most basic information from the physics of flight, to teaching you how to conduct a GPS approach. You will also learn how to read an approach plate and land in one mile visibility with an ILS approach. It also is such a great source of reference for just anytime you want to read-up on something you already know about and apply it with practice on the simulator. It also has a really good section for helping to learn some of the basics of the "glass cockpit," in the event you're about to be transitioning from the old gauges to the Garmin-1000!!!I now have twins who will be sitting behind the yoke in the computer room soon. My boy has actually already grabbed it a few times, but at 19 months he's not quite there yet...haha But when the day comes, this book will basically allow me to be his flight instructor. The information in this book is worth thousands of dollars when you consider the cost of a flight instructor ($22 an hour in 2002-03 was cheap compared to what they probably are now). I recommend buying this book for any person who has a simulator, whether you're new to flying or a veteran. If you're planning on pursuing aviation in real-life, it will save you A LOT of money long-term, since you won't have to practice so much on a real plane!

I love that motto! It really highlights the degree to which flight simulators on PCs have supplanted the old, expensive, mechanical flight simulators available only for military and commercial pilots. Flying in real planes has become more expensive, but flying in high-quality simulators based on modern desktops and even laptops has become affordable for more people than ever. This change allows a previously unprecedented number of people everywhere an opportunity to meaningfully participate in the craft of learning to piloting an aircraft.And this book covers it all! I look to it for advice on every aircraft I want to fly, and study it for clues every time I want Flight Simulator to do something new. There are several things I didn't even know Flight Simulator could do that I've picked up from just leafing through this great manual.

This is one of the best how-to books on MSFSX I have read. It ranks up there with any number of awesome youtube videos in its explanation of flight concepts, flight and system dynamics, and the possibilities and limitations of MSFSX default aircraft and systems. It takes a gradual, systematic, step-by-step approach from relatively simple, single-engine aircraft through multi-engined aircraft with simulations of relatively modern and complex instrumentation systems (communications, GPS and glass cockpits, for example). If one follows the book's approach section by section in flying the MSFSX aircraft, by the end of the book, the reader has progressed to a Boeing 737, is capable of flying trans-continental or even trans-oceanic flights in a simulated real world environment. The included flightplans and lessons are both clear and concise. I'd recommend this book for anyone trying to learn more about using MSFSX rather than just "yanking and banking" a plane on the Easy setting.

Loved this book. I compared it to another book that was more "scenario" based and this seemed much better in my opinion. This book is better about holding your hand and assuming you have no knowledge of flying and really does a great job of explaining things step by step. The explanations are very clear and was fun to read. I've since moved on to taking real lessons and I think my flight instructors agreed that it gave me a major head start. I actually picked up the Kindle version recently because I think the book makes a great reference for brushing up on things.

I echo many of the other reviewers, this is a very good book, and provides a very good framework for understanding much of what is happening/ has happened in the world. The problem is that the narrative is not supported by the maps to see what Marshall is writing about. This is a failure in form and function, the few maps provided are very poor. This could be a very powerful publication if supported with decent maps. Buy the book, and buy a good world atlas with historic maps. A digital, interactive, set of maps would make this book pop.This would be a great framework to lead into so many history classes, or a lead into a curriculum in our school systems. The book touches on so much of the daily subjects seen on the world stage. 5 stars for the concept of the book, 2 to 3 stars for publishers presentation. Buy the book, but supplement it with map resources.

Prisoners of Geography gives an overview of modern geopolitics through the lens of geography. It provides a brief history of the worlds major geographic regions and powers and how geography has both shaped events as well as define current relationships. The author sets out chapters for China, Russia, the US, Western Europe, Africa, the Middle East, the Indian subcontinent, Korea and Japan, Latam as well as the Arctic. The author spends some time on South America but discusses how despite resource wealth the trade distance has been prohibitive.The role of geography in politics is of course of utmost importance. It is usually subordinated these days to the narratives of the time but in Prisoners of Geography the author spells out how it is geography that defines national interest and creates the conditions for conflict. It is definitely a quick read and there is far more comprehensive books out there on how geography has defined development and historic conflicts but this is a highly readable overview for interpreting today's politics.

Very interesting perspective. I have one big objection. I don't agree with the hypothesis put forth by the author about western powers dividing Africa and India using lines on a map without reference to age-old tribal and geographical boundaries. The western powers knew EXACTLY what they were doing. Do you think they wanted the countries they were creating to actually be strong? NO. They wanted them to stay weak and internally conflicted so they could continue to exploit their resources even after African countries and India became independent. India was divided in a way so as to make conflict almost a certainty. It was vengeful. After ruling India for 200 years, the British did not even stay for 200 days after announcing independence. They allowed millions to be massacred and did not allow British troops to be used to safeguard the biggest migration of people ever.

Before I began reading and listening to this book, I read the complaint of a number of reviewers: there aren’t enough good maps included with the book. That may be true, but with the wealth of excellent maps available on the internet, that wasn’t a big issue for me. Also, while the author may be wrong or biased on a few points, who isn’t? Finally, even though a few events, such as a Chinese financier helping Nicaragua build a second canal through Central America, may no longer be relevant (as of March 2018 this project has been abandoned) , overall I found this book to be eye-opening in helping me to begin to understand the world in ways I hadn’t thought about it before. Looks like the Arctic will be an area heating up in the future! I highly recommend this book.

I would give this 5 stars for the insightful approach to explaining the importance of geography for politics and economics and as a novel way to look at historical events. However it's HUGELY disappointing that the provided maps are relatively few and of extremely low B&W quality. The publisher's saving a dollar or so per copy that they could easily have recouped by raising the price makes this far less involving and interesting a read than it could have been.

I found this book a fascinating new way to look at some regions I thought I understood well and an insightful way to understand better other regions. Marshall makes a compelling case that an appreciation of physical geography plays a vital role in a country's or region's wealth and motivation for war and peace. For example, I confess to never have reflected on the importance of having navigable and intersecting rivers or how South America's lack of natural harbors has affected its development. I started this book on my Kindle and bought the hardback so that I could easily flip to the maps as I read the chapters. There was so much to absorb that I suspect I will pick it up again.
