Marlene Wasserman - Dr Eve - is an experienced clinical sexologist and couple and sex therapist in private practice. She specialises in sexual medicine and forensic sexology and has a special interest in onco-sexology. The majority of her time is spent in her therapy room with couples - and individuals - on her couch. She teaches sexual medicine at the medical school of the University of Cape Town and regularly presents papers at international scientific meetings. She is a member of both the executive board and the Sexual Rights Committee of the World Association for Sexual Health (WAS), and a temporary adviser to the World Health Association (WHO). An award-winning writer, she has columns in many South African magazines such as Natural Medicine, Longevity, Psychologies, Sarie and Playboy. She also writes on request for many international and national magazines and newspapers, and has published in a number of academic journals. This is a really good book about alcoholism. There are many, many memoirs about drinking. I've read a fair few. This is a particularly good one. Hepola brings a particularly incisive introspection to her tale of drinking too much and getting sober. Hepola managed to be very successful while an alcoholic. She completed her education and became a writer. Blackouts were probably the most frightening thing about Hepola's alcoholism. Her brain was so alcohol-addled that it was unable to remember- the drug was literally circumventing one of the primary functions of the brain. Her accounts of these blackouts- what it was like to come out and to try and figure out what happened, are evocative. It is clear that Hepola is a talented writer. She is able to narrate her experience brilliantly. This is one of the best addiction memoirs I've read.

As a recovering alcoholic with 2.5 yrs sober, living in Austin, with several decades of service in the bar scene here? There were times when I wondered if I had written this in a blackout of my own? Brilliantly and savagely recorded. I loved every word, and gathered renewed strength from her insights and observations. As most of her rowdy friends began to settle down, Sarah found herself frequently being invite to lunch during which her friends told her they "needed to talk." Her behavior was getting more noticeably out of control and undesirable as her friends were growing up but she was still drinking like she was in college.Finally, Sarah had enough and found the courage to stop drinking for real. She was expecting her life to immediately fall into place as soon as she stopped drinking but found it was a huge struggle to assimilate herself into a lifestyle which did not include alcohol. She had always assumed her life would become uninteresting when she was no longer the party girl but was happily surprised to find her new life eventually became full and much better.WHAT I LOVEDI am amazed by Sarah Hepola's honesty. The book is short and moves along fairly well. What do you get? The author gives an overview of data science that distinguishes machine learning from data mining, artificial intelligence, etc. I found this useful. He gives specific examples of how machine learning is implemented in marketing and elsewhere. Different types of algorithms, some supported by humans and some not, do the machine learning or data mining or other data science. The author does not go into great depth on these algorithms, which is consistent with his goal of providing an overview for beginners.The book has some math. Once again, I think this is included to alert a beginner that understanding and working with math is mandatory to work in this field. The author lists job titles and salary ranges for jobs in the data science/machine learning fields.If you or someone you know think that data science may be a career in which you would be interested, I recommend the book.

Good easy super intro read

I purchased two introductory e-books on Machine Learning. One cost me $20 and this one cost me $3. The $20 book had 399 pages but I got so completely lost before hitting page 100 that I gave up in defeat. (My iPad Kindle app doesn’t have page numbers, so I can’t tell you exactly what page I was on but it seemed like I had been reading forever).Then I found this $3 book – Machine Learning for Absolute Beginners – was not only short but it came out as the clear winner because I was able to get through right to the end of it with ease and without confusion. So turns out I got more than my money’s worth here with this book!And on top of that, this book was clear, well-written and a definite confidence builder. The knowledge I’ve gained from this book regarding ML models and basic algorithms gives me more confidence to go back to the other more expensive book for a second attempt.In summary, if this is your first foray into Machine Learning then this here is your book! It is the perfect stepping stone to other more lengthy options.

Before I ever discovered the Heidelberg Catechism, I memorized and studied the Westminster Catechism. I wish I could say that I had nobler motives, but the truth was that if I had memorized the catechism and wrote an essay on it assigned by the Presbyterian Church USA, I had a good chance of getting a stipend from the denomination given to students who attended PC(USA) colleges. So, I, along with 2 or 3 of my college peers began to work hard to memorize the text, and we succeeded both in memorizing the document and in receiving the $1000 dollars promised for doing so. Somehow, in the process, I was given a study guide of the catechism by someone. The study guide was from G.I. Williamson.Now that I am getting deeper in my study of the Heidelberg Catechism, I have also picked up a study guide on Heidelberg by Williamson entitled (surprise) The Heidelberg Catechism: A Study Guide. Many times, as I read what he says, I hear a person with questions that come from a more conservative hermaneutical perspective than I, and from a different generation than I. Nevertheless, I find his discussion on each week of questions and answers helpful because he helps me see things from my church people's perspective (who are also from a more mature generation), and it helps me read the text with fresh eyes. There are times when I disagree with Williamson, but I appreciate his willingness to stay rooted in his Orthodox Presbyterian tradition.Each chapter has commentary on the questions and answers to be studied on each week. They also questions on the lesson, and questions for further study on the biblical and theological issues that the week's questions bring up. Williamson is thorough!No matter what perspective you come from, I think if you want to study the Heidelberg Catechism, you need to The Heidelberg Catechism: A Study Guide by Williamson on your desk.
