About the Author
John Steinbeck was born in Salinas, California, in 17 February 1902. After studying English at Stanford University, he held several jobs including working as a hod-carrier, apprentice painter, laboratory assistant, ranch hand, fruit-picker, construction worker at Madison Square Gardens, New York, and reporter for the New York American. In 1935 he became a full-time writer and was a special writer for the United States Army Air Force during World War II. Among his most renowned works are Of Mice and Men, Cannery Row, East of Eden and The Grapes of Wrath, which won the Pulitzer Prize in 1940. In 1926 Steinbeck was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature as a mark of his outstanding contribution to literature, his unquestionable popularity and his versatility. In his speech accepting the Nobel Prize, Steinbeck gave his view of authorship: 'The ancient omission of the writer has not changed. He is charged with exposing our may grevious faults and failures, with dredging up to the light our dark and dangerous dreams for the purpose of improvement. Furthermore, the writer is delegated to declare and to celebrate man's proven capacity for greatness of heart and spirit for gallantry in defeat - for courage, compassion and love.' John Steinbeck died on 20th December 1968.

But the author also lauds him for his business acumen, his guileless enthusiasm and every man persona. The image of Charles waiting patiently in the cafeteria line every day refusing to pull rank has been repeated elsewhere but is reviewed in full here. It's no act. And about business, Schulman reports that:"Charles’s emphasis on growth and laser-like focus on profit were not rooted in a desire to become one of the world’s richest men. The spark that drove him to build his company and keep building it came from a different place. “He doesn’t do it to make money, never has,” said Tony Woodlief, the former Koch Industries management consultant. “It’s always just been a great, big fascinating puzzle. He’s most excited when they’ve solved some problem. ‘Golly, we buy this shipping terminal and start producing this product and holy cow, we now have an international distribution network. That stumped everybody for fifty years and we figured it out.’ That’s what he likes.”Schulman's work on the depiction of the dichotomy of David Koch is particularly compelling. A mainstay of the NYC society scene, David's largess in funding major works and edifices in the arts comes from a real place of personal values rather than any attempt to curry favor (indeed, Schulman shows he could care less). A particular example is his funding of the American Ballet Theatre, ensuring that it played in NYC venues. Koch's support vexes those bitterly opposed to his politics. Most of his peers seem to have found a way to make these thoughts co-exist.Schulman's work is also strong on Fred Koch Sr, the roots of his deep-seated hatred of Communism and his signature role in the John Birch Society. I learned a lot from this book.

I received this book as a Christmas present. The book was so enlightening I purchased it for a friend. The story of the Koch family is surprising again and again. The quirks of the brothers are only exceeded by the wealth the family has been able to amass. The notoriety that was pushed upon them was not sought. Their contributions are in marked contrast to publicity they glean. In the final chapters of the book one finds that they are not part and party to some organizations, but rather hold them in disdain. If you have any desire to know more about a family who has attempted to hold sway over our government and economy - this book is for you. It is full of surprises!

This is a well researched biography of the four Koch brothers and their families and associates. A very difficult job excellently done. Much of human interaction of strong willed exceptionally capable people with their own agendas.What is conspicuously missing is much description of the philosophy for which they have become so noted. Considering their impact on the political thinking of the US, it may be unfortunate that so little analysis is done of its impact on the US role on the world stage, especially considering its largely European origins and the competition with the political philosophies governing China and Russia. On the other hand, this probably should be the subject of major debate and analysis elsewhere.

I bought this book 1.5 years ago with the intention of understanding the inner world, motivations and thinking of these oil magnates who like to meddle in American politics. I had little expectation about liking the book as I saw it more as an exercise in learning American history. I started reading the book 4 days ago and couldn't put it down. I was very surprised and impressed by the exquisite and well-structured narrative of the Koch brothers’ life stories. The author astutely first leaves out and then slowly reveals in much later chapters the more shocking details and surprising aspects of the brothers’ politics, oil business, and family feud, a strategy that has much stronger impact as the details are learned in the context of all the information read before it. This narrative structure makes the book feel like a suspenseful crime drama. The 4 brothers and the patriarch are involved in so many influential power and money grabbing machinations, in mindboggling family feuds and excesses, and in obsessive pursuits in controlling the government, denying climate change and in brainwashing people with their capitalistic ideologies that as a reader who is not personally acquainted with that lifestyle or mentality, it feels like someone suggested, like watching some episodes of the Dallas TV series. But once removed from the book narrative the shocking realization comes that these people are real, that the events described in the book are corroborated by witnesses, news articles, and by history, and that the actions of these brothers affect all of our lives and not for the better. This will be difficult to admit for some, such as, for example, the Metropolitan Museum of Art director Thomas P. Campbell who after getting $65 million from one Koch brother renamed the Met new plaza with David Koch’s name.

I'm a fan of historical fiction, so I was excited to read this book since it had so many great reviews. However, I must agree with those who have already cited some of the major flaws of this book. I felt it lacked character development; the main character felt thin, and the supporting characters (e.g. Brida) felt like afterthoughts. The events in the story felt very repetitive in the way they were described and I didn't feel like the book painted a very vivid picture of life in the 800s. I couldn't help but contrast the writing style to the author I consider to the master of period fiction, Larry McMurtry... McMurtry's ability to paint a vivid picture draws you in to the story in such a way that you feel lost in the world he's describing. I guess I was hoping this story would provide the same depth, but somehow it just lacked any tension or spark. I enjoyed some of the humorous moments and the bits of historical insight the book did offer, but it wasn't enough to make me want to read the sequels.

I'm still in the glow of living vicariously in Uhtred's world. I can't begin to tell exactly why this story affected me so deeply, except to say that the author did everything right. He lost no time making me care about the main character, just a child at the beginning of the story. Within the first dozen pages, I was hooked, invested in the story--wanting to know more, and needing to know young Uhtred's fate.The narration is first person, and occasionally, throughout the story, the narrator intrudes, addressing the reader directly. While in some books, this doesn't work, in The Last Kingdom, it worked so well, I anticipated when it would happen, and I looked forward to it. Each time, it upped the tension just a knot. Another thing that worked incredibly well was that this entire book is told by Uhtred as an old man, sharing the tale of his life, looking back on events--An incredibly entertaining stroll through 9th century, English history mingled with a few fictional characters. Outstanding read.

Great story of Vikings invading what will be a future England. It was such a pleasure to read a book with pieces of real history, real people and real places, in it. I loved the fact that author did not try to make a fictional main character, Uthred, a contemporary humanitarian but gave him a perky, mischievous and often cruel personality fitting the Viking image. I also loved the sense of humor, although, most of the time it was a black humor. But I could not help laughing while reading about, otherwise tragic, end of Prince Edmund. There is a lot of carnage in this book (after all it is a book about a war) but only some of the gruesome details are described, so reader is not swamped with too many horror images.The reasons for 4 stars instead of 5 are: 1) Too many battles. It may be a plus for other readers but once I read about fighting in “shield wall” I did not need to read about it again and again. 2) I had problem placing many people with similar-sounding names starting with “ash” and figuring out how they are related.There is actually a map at the beginning at the book and list of places and names but I missed it since my kindle opened on first chapter and I just started reading. So my advise to readers is; do not miss map and list, they are very helpful.I liked very much author’s Amazon web page that, by itself, is a great story told with a great humor.I think I will try next a book from different series by this author (hoping for fewer battles).

I love reading epic fantasy, most especially when the story is somewhat based on history. My inclination to read this book is due to the TV series. My interest is piqued to find out more about the life of the male protagonist, Uthred, since the TV adaptation covers only the best highlights of the story. This book entails the life of Uthred at age 10 to 20 during the war of Danes and England around 866 to 877 A.D. The POV is from Uthred himself. The story has developed and progressed the way I have expected it to be...in chronological order since it is based on history. The names of places and characters are a bit hard for me to pronounce or even remember, and so I have jotted them down (like Alfred who is constantly writing, LOL) for reference in my future reading. I have enjoyed reading this book. I am excited to read the next installment and find out more of Uthred's destiny.

“The Last Kingdom” is fun and easy-to-read, well-written and brings to life King Alfred’s battles with the Vikings. Much of this book parallels the TV series "The Vikings." I would recommend this book for the young adult crowd who has enjoyed the “Harry Potter” series. For serious readers of historical fiction, however, I would suggest they look elsewhere. The language, style and subject matter are designed for a sixteen year-old male readership; there are no feminine voices in the novel; and the treatment of history is superficial.

I loved this story and it is typical of the fine work one can expect from the pen of Bernard Cornwell. I have enjoyed many of his novels and this one fulfilled my expectations. I particularly noticed how it was written in first person. When one character is telling the tale, they observe what happens as they perceive it. I often wonder when reading a novel in this format, at what the other characters are feeling and thinking. To me it is very tricky to write this way and produces one view of the story. This is the first time I have not felt that I wanted to know more about the other characters thoughts. Cornwell has a way of showing the others reactions to what the protagonist says and does. The author is so skilled at assembling all the players on his stage he creates a novel that lingers in the mind long after the end. It's one of those books that is so rich with content that it begs some time to digest it. Reminds me of savoring fine wine.
