This is the world's most boring cookbook. No photos or commentary. It seems like the author printed out recipes from the internet and put them in this boring book. Don't bother buying this.

way too complicated for a basic teen. I was looking for a more beginner style cookbook. Something to teach a teenager how to get cooking some of their favorite recipes. This cookbook is beyond complicated. Not a good option for a beginner.

The beginning of the book has some great information on cooking terms and tools; however, it was almost too much information for a novice to absorb. There were many easy recipes, but most of them seemed to have a lot of ingredients, which might be overwhelming for a beginner or teenager. What I loved about the book is the great job it did teaching versatility in cooking--that you can interchange ingredients to suit your tastes and can substitute items with what you have on hand. Overall, I’d recommend this book for any teenager who has an interest in learning to cook.

I was disappointed, has absolutely no pictures. My daughter showed no interest in it.

I'm a teen who knows my way around the kitchen (at least decently so!) and I've tried two recipes out of this book. I'm a fan of their recipes for a one person for dinner, most of which don't require a whole lot of prep. I made "White Angel Hair" which had a delicious creamy and cheesy sauce. One of my girlfriends and I doubled it and had it for dinner-- it hit the spot. As someone who has done her fair share of cooking, this wasn't a challenging recipe, but it's helpful to have the proportions for spice and cheese. I also went for the chocolate chip cookie recipe. Mmmm :) This would be good for teens who are working their way up to cooking for themselves, especially because it gives you some pointers on shopping, such as how to keep your cost down. I'm not sold on the way it sneaks in whole wheat flour and vegetables for some recipes, but since I'd probably use them anyways, it's proooobably not a bad idea.Bonus: This book has a full-blown glossary of cooking terms and conversions, as well as a thorough list of required cooking equipment.

The Cookbook for Teens is a quick, easy read. It's a primer for cooking with a couple of great introductory chapters of information your teens need to know before getting started followed by recipes categorized according to types of meals. I love the suggestions on what items to keep on hand - very useful list of pantry items as well as the idea of recipes for one. Many folks learn to cook by starting with breakfast and it's a smart move that they begin with recipes for the morning. I enjoyed reading these best and I like that there is a variety in the recipes. I am looking forward to having my two teens say " there's nothing to eat" and giving them this book! What I don't love about the recipes is there are quite a few spices and odd arrangements of ingredients which I think will make my teens scrunch up their noses. Also, the recommendation to just leave an ingredient out or sub something else could result in some disasters - for instance if you leave out a can of tomatoes because you don't like them, how will that affect the consistency and taste of the final product? One thing is certain...this book will provide for some new adventure in the kitchen!

Very easy to follow recipes and my 11 y.o. daughter uses it all the time. She has made everything from soups to desserts and with the exception of the paprika soup (holy onions!), it has all been good. Well written and well worth the money.

Got this for a teenager I don’t know personally so this review is based on aesthetics and price and not so much the book’s recipes or usefulness. I found the lack of photos or drawings of any kind rather unfortunate, given the book is meant for novice cooks. I ended up buying Mark Bittner’s wonderful illustrated volume “How to Cook Everything”. Much better for a beginner and filled with lovely photos, charts, etc...

About the Author

Larry Hodges, of Germantown, MD, is a member of the U.S. Table Tennis Hall of Fame as a coach and writer. He’s certified as a National Coach by USA Table Tennis, the highest level, and coaches at the Maryland Table Tennis Center. As a writer he has nine books and over 1500 published articles in over 140 publications. He’s also an active member of Science Fiction Writers of America, with over 70 short story sales and the novel “Sorcerers in Space,” a humorous fantasy about the U.S.-Soviet space race in the 1960s, with sorcerers instead of astronauts. Many of his best stories are compiled in the anthology “Pings and Pongs.” His story “The Awakening” was the unanimous grand prize winner at the 2010 Garden State Horror Writers Short Story Competition. Disclaimer: I reviewed an earlier draft of the book for the author.If you're a ponger, you know that an American doing well in the World Championships is about as rare a Loch Ness monster sighting. But hey, if you thought the U.S. hockey team could win the gold medal in 1980, if you thought Argentina could beat the U.S. in basketball in the 2004 Olympics in Athens, and if you cried during the ending scene of "Rudy", then this book is for you.You really do have to keep your fantasy hat on while reading the book. Set aside that Chinese National Team fanboi-ism for a little bit and you'll be guaranteed a nice literary experience. The story is basically what it says in the back cover, an American who goes to China to learn the Chinese secrets of table tennis.Pros: I really liked the chapter with Ogimura. The physical preparation for table tennis really pumped me up to go out and do a few sprints and some push-ups. It was like a motivation CD that you listen to in your car before hitting the gym. Once you arrive, you're ready to get down to business. I also enjoyed reading the chapter with "The Dragon". It was really very funny for me. Again, keep your fantasy hat on. There was also a good bit of history in the book. I knew a little bit being a ponger but there were a few things that I had to search online for verification. The World Championship match was complete insanity. The development of the characters of Andy and Coach Wang were excellent in that a reader can identify with both of their motivations.Cons: The chapter with Rong Guotuan was a bit dark. I was not put off by it as I enjoy those kinds things in other books also. I just did not think it fit in well with the overall feel of the book. I suppose it would be like putting bacon in an ice cream cone. Some might like it and some might not.Overall, Larry did a great job mixing TT history, fantasy, and fiction in a 100-page package.

A fascinating story of an American wanting to be the best in the world of table tennis, going to China for some magical and intriguing training sessions, and how he eventually achieved his hard-earned success. The best part is in the journey of it - vivid, colorful descriptions of the matches, processes, psyches, and sometimes point-by-point analysis. This was a real page-turner, and was one of the best binges I've been on.
